    Passenger World Tour

    10749997_10152653171483964_8440307613739188431_o

Having just wrapped up a sold out tour in Europe, and an already sold out tour in Australia and New Zealand scheduled for January, Passenger will make his way to South Africa with performances set in Durban, Johannesburg and at the Kirstenbosch Summer Sunset Concerts in Cape Town.

Passenger’s ballad Let Her Go topped the charts in 2013, establishing him as a breakthrough in the international music scene.

Let Her Go not only became one of the UK’s biggest selling singles of all-time; it also spiralled into adoration – being the ninth most Shazamed song in the world, soundtracked to the most popular ad over the Superbowl and over 400 million views on YouTube.

The busking sensation continues to achieve an overwhelming response from fans and their love for Passenger’s beautiful music. Whispers is Passenger’s sixth studio album, and although it only took five weeks to record, this cinematic sound brings Mike’s words to life, with guitar, glockenspiel, melodica and various percussion instruments filtering through.

    Takealot Cape Town 10′s Tournament

    takealot.com Cape Town 10s

Billed as the world’s largest rugby 10s contest, the takealot.com Cape Town 10s rugby tournament, which takes over Hamilton’s Rugby Club in Green Point on Friday, 6 and Saturday, 7 February 2015, is the sporting and social highlight of the year.

With a mere 24 teams participating in 2009, the year it all started, 2014 was a highlight with over 2,200 rugby and netball players across 130 teams, strutting their stuff both on- and off the field.

    RUGBY & NETBALL

150 teams are set to go head-to-head in approximately 800 games during this two-day sporting challenge. Fans can catch international rugga legends alongside some of South Africa’s very own icons, like John Smit, Butch James, Percy Montgomery, Bob Skinstad and Rob Fleck (the latter two are the founders of the event), as they scrum up for this adrenaline-pumping tournament. What’s more, after 2014 saw the fist addition of netball to the sporting repertoire, we looking at 50 netball teams billed to shoot hoops during the tourney.

    ENTERTAINMENT

This event is not just about the sporting rugby action though; the much-loved Mother City tournament is, in fact, also one big jol featuring top-notch musical acts, dress-up competitions, plenty of food and wine stalls, a huge beer tent (said to be Africa’s biggest) and even entertainment and sports clinics for the little ones. The day’s activities on both Friday and Saturday will culminate in big parties that are bound to be unforgettable.

    ABOUT 10s RUGBY

Unlike other rugby union variants, such as rugby sevens and beach rugby, that were developed in major rugby nations, rugby 10s is said to have originated in Malaysia (a nation that is yet to make its debut at the Rugby World Cup). The rules are very similar to those of rugby sevens, but teams consist of 10 players, usually five forwards and five backs, and the games are much shorter than standard rugby, typically consisting of two 10-minute halves.

    ABOUT 10s NETBALL

The new addition of netball to the 2014 tournament has sparked huge interest. We are looking at hosting 50 netball teams that play to official NSA rules on the Green point cricket oval. The well groomed grass surface is perfect for levelling the playing field between teams and so much kinder on the knees! The games consist of two 10-minute halves.

    The Cape Town J&B Met

    jbmet_680_486_80_s

The haute couture equestrian event of the year is ‘Made for the Mix’ in 2015

Horse racing is as much a part of summer as are visits to the beach and poolside cocktails, and what better way to experience this sizzling season than at one of South Africa’s most celebrated outdoor social, fashion and sporting events of the year.

This year’s theme, ‘Made for the Mix’, celebrates the unique result that comes from mixing contrasting elements and encourages the well-heeled to shake things up on the fashion front with multiple styles of sophisticated and glamorous garb. After all, while tradition and equestrian pageantry may constitute the core of the historical horse race, the J&B Met is just as much about ground-breaking haute couture that challenges conventions and celebrates bold attitudes. Or, more simply, it’s about decadence, debauchery and ‘who’ you’re wearing.

    Cape Town Minstrel Carnival

Kaapse klopse’ or Cape Town Minstrel Carnival: The city of Cape Town comes alive to celebrate new year in a raucous carnival the likes of which are not seen elsewhere in the world, unless you’re ready to compare it with the mardi gras in New Orleans and the carnevale in Rio de Janeiro, which it isn’t, not quite, although certainly it has its roots therein.

The Cape Town Minstrel Carnival, as it’s officially known, takes place every year at new year when thousands of musicians, singers, dancers and tailors connected to them, gear themselves for the traditional ‘Kaapse klopse’ or ‘Coon carnival’ (its more common name – although this isn’t a particularly politically correct term in the ‘new South Africa’).

The origin of the carnival stretches back to the 19th century and has its origins in the time of slavery in Cape Town, when the original citizens of District Six were allowed their one day off on January 1st. The event, which has developed a distinct Cape flavour, is also supposed to have ties to the minstrel entertainers who stopped off in Cape Town on huge American ocean liners, over 100 years ago.

Over ten thousand costumed, banjo-picking musicians and dancers, their faces painted white, as opposed to the original black-painted faces of the visiting minstrels, parade and march through the streets, followed by a series of dance, singing and costume competitions at Green Point Stadium.

With band names like ‘dixies’, ‘the district six band’, and songs like ‘take me to Mannenberg’, this is a celebration of life and new year, rather than a reflection on the days of slavery, for most of those involved are third or fourth generation, and the more garish the costume, and the more the banjo tunes can make your feet tap, the better.
